 A Wedding Photographer’s View of Grittenham Barn Honest, Unposed Moments at a Beautiful West Sussex Barn There’s something brilliant about a barn wedding that doesn’t try too hard — and that’s exactly what I found at Grittenham Barn. It’s one of those places that feels relaxed the second you arrive. No pretence, no over-styling — just a proper Sussex barn set in open countryside. I love venues that allow couples (and Sussex Wedding photographers) to breathe a bit. Grittenham has that open layout that means I can quietly move around and capture what’s really happening — the laughs, the hugs, the slightly chaotic bits, and the moments nobody plans but everyone remembers. It’s also incredibly photogenic without being fussy. Natural light floods the barn, there are trees and fields all around it, and the owners clearly care about the place. The kind of venue where good stuff just happens. Why Grittenham Barn Works So Well for Documentary PhotographyIf you’re planning a relaxed barn wedding in West Sussex, this place is hard to beat. The space works in your favour — the courtyard’s great for drinks and chatting, the barn itself gives off warm, golden light, and the farm-style layout keeps everything close without feeling cramped. You don’t have to fake anything here. It’s the kind of venue that encourages real moments, which suits how I shoot perfectly — honest, documentary-style photography with no cheesy posing and no barking orders. "We found Mike after a lot of internet research and we chose him because of the strength of his portfolio online, which included lots of 'in the moment' photos, being the exact style we were after. Having spoken to Mike mainly by email and then later by phone, we found him easy going, open to our suggestions, straightforward to deal with and very relaxed - certainly more relaxed than we were! We met up for a beer and a chat in advance of the big day to run through our likes and dislikes and we felt that Mike was very responsive and focused on our requirements. On the day itself Mike snapped away unobtrusively, stuck to our pre-agreed game plan and generally left the wedding to flow nicely and as planned. We had to wait a bit longer than expected for the photos to arrive but when they did we were overwhelmed by the huge number of photos, including a good amount that we were especially happy with. Since then Mike has been very helpful and flexible in resending links for downloading and recreating colour photos in black and white, whilst retaining the quality levels. We have printed a number now and they look great.
